Anybody know where I could get some scaffolding from?
I want to make a kayak rack and need:

8 X 2.4M (8') tube
8 X 1.0M (3') tube
1 X 3.0M (10') tube
26 X Double Couplers
4 feet
2 x 3.0m boards

I've tried Lewes Scaffolding with no joy. Any suggestions appreciated.

Thanks RickS but new tube is expensive and having it delivered rases the cost even more. I'm really after second hand stuff.
I've tried Gumtree and Friday-Ad but have not found anything.
I do have pipe cutters of the correct size so no problems there.
Thanks.

Hi River Boy, I am having the same trouble trying to find some secondhand corrugated iron sheets to make a lean too to cover my chicken run. It's the same old story, you see loads of it until you need it. Anyway good luck and if I come across any scaffold poles I will let you know.

Cheers Teacher. I am a scavenger of corrugated iron myself, but I use the stuff use as sanctuaries for reptiles. If I come across any more around here though I'll let you know.

Coincidentally I am making a chicken run too. It had not crossed my mind to cover it. Perhaps I should.
I'm using these instructions (see lowever down page) and am just waiting on a staple gun before stapling the chicken wire to the posts and then increasing our flock from three to six.

Hi River Boy, thanks for info on chicken run, I was adviced that if they are in a permanent position it is a good idea to concrete the base they are on because the earth starts getting bitter and smelling, you then put regular supplies of straw down which when changed makes good garden fertiliser. That is why it is wise to have a roof over the run to stop it getting too wet. Good luck.

Our situations are probably different then. I intend to move the run every six months or so, as the grass disappears. I'll be using straw for bedding though and have been collecting pallets to make a raised composting enclosure for the soiled stuff.

In retrospect a cover (at least partial) might not be a bad idea.

Errr, come someone explain to me, probably in words of one syllable, how did we get to chicken runs from scaffolding ?

I know scaffolding and chickens are poles apart so I know eggsactly what you mean DFL. But isnt it nice to have a friendly thread without all the bickering that normally goes on. Good luck River Boy I only wish I had the room to move my run about.

Hi RiverBoy, just out of curiosity do you use the river Ouse for your kayaking, if so where do you launch from. There is a reason why I am asking.

Gosh it's almost like a real conversation where subjects move on and develop ! I'm sure everyone knows this but metals prices are high at the mo because of shortages, especially in metals such as copper - in copper's case it's why thieves are constantly nicking cabling from railways and causing such misery for commuters, and nicking lead from church roofs etc. So you're unlikely to find corrugated iron, scaffolding poles etc very cheaply. Scrap yard definitely the best bet unless you hand around the local tip ?
Anyway - here's a list of dealers for you

Teacher. I fish and Kayak on the Ouse, which sort of puts me in conflict with myself!

Anyone who intends to kayak on thje Ouse should realise that it is only legal in the tidal section below Barcombe Mills. Above the Mills, strictly speaking you are breaking the law and trespassing.

Saying that, I put in at the Mills (not the trout pool!) and at Barcombe's Anchor Inn (opposite bank).

I've given a price and a promise that they'll bring it into Lewes from a Scaffolding Company who've stuck some up on a building opposite our office so hopefully I'm now sorted.

There is waste corrugated iron on most farms and small holdings around here. All you need to do is ask someone. I was collecting some well-rotted-manure from a place near Fairwarp yesterday where they had some (I did ask for you teacher, but the owner was not around. I'm back there Saturday, so if she is I'll bring a sheet of two back for you).

That would be great River Boy. If you manage to get some or put me in touch with someone whos got some then Brill. The reason I asked about where you launch is because I own a stretch of river bank next to an old quay near southerham roundabout and you would be welcome to use it for a while.

This forum would make a good question on QI - what's the link between scaffolding, corrugated sheeting, kayaks, fishing and chickens ? Discuss !!

The link is obvious DFL, If you were on a desert island and had scaffold poles, corrugated iron, Kayaks, fishing and chickens then you would be completely self sufficient.

Did I mention I'd planted an orchard?

Thanks for that Teacher. I've only ever kayaked in my local non-tidal stretch but have been meaning to take a trip down to the John Harvey tavern for a few years, so I might just take you up on that!

If you carry on past John Harveys tavern theres a boat club on the left then a few boats moored to pontoons on the southerham side of the tunnel. my quay and stretch of river bank is just before you go under the railway bridge. If you are interested I can arrange to meet you there virtually anytime. DFL will be so gutted to read that you have just planted an orchard Ha Ha.
